Chan Chao was born in 1966 in Kalemyo (Burma). He is an American photographer.
Chao was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1966. In 1978, he and his family fled Burma to the United States.
Chao studied under John Gossage at the University of Maryland, College Park. Chao was 30 years old when he decided to travel to Burma, the first time since his family fled. However, a visa was denied. He instead traveled to Thailand, crossed illegally into Burma and photographed a Burmese rebel group. These images comprise his books Burma: Something Went Wrong and Letter from PLF. A book of nudes for females, Echo, is also available. His Burma portraits were included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Chao was one of 113 artists selected for the show. One of the curators of the show said, “With Chan Chao’s photos, there certainly is a quality of photojournalism… but they are also pieces of art. “
Chao’s photos are part of the permanent collection of Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden and Corcoran Gallery of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art. They also include the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art. His work has been published in Colors Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, GEO Magazine, Culture+Travel Magazine and The Walrus.
Chan Chao lives in the Washington, DC area. He is a professor of photography at George Washington University. He previously taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
